What gear do you want the player to have? How much would a person have to pay for? How much time do i need to put into this?

I might want to tryout (if there are tryouts) or maybe not but it depends on those 3 questions above.

The money to spend, is all up to you. If your a first time buyer you dont need to spend a lot of money. You need a basic setup but you want reliable gear. Smart Parts, BT , Tippmann are great companys to go with. You are probably looking at between $300-400 for a good set up. The time is again up to you. You're not going to learn by sitting at home. Get out and play. We play every weeknd. Go to Torrid and they can get you set up with everything you need. Also they are having a play day this up coming Sunday 28th. Its a great deal you should come out bring a few friends who are interested as well. Torrids scenario team will be there playing plus answering any questions people have plus helping them play teaching some basic steps. Good luck.
